Walking in to the sound of Heatwave (Punchline Records) amidst the finest selection of R&B, bashment, soco and Caribbean flavours since Notting Hill Carnival, we were pleased that RWD in Stereo was off to a good start. A slow yet promising 8pm start was soon eclipsed by the opening of a post Eastenders/ The Bill floodgate and the Cargo dwellers seemed all too pleased with the sprinkling of free drink. The sounds of Rinse FM DJ's Design and Kendall got the dance into a UKG/ hip hop/ R&B frenzy, with the biggest reactions coming from their +5 crew. The vibrant female DJs knew how to draw the avid bar lingerers to the filling dancefloor and when it was time for Lowkey to jump on the mic, the stage was well and truly set. Starting with a spoken word mind-blower ‘Key really showed why he’s currently talk of the town.

Sway’s partner in rhyme Pyrelli soon donned the stage with slick flows and a somewhat brief PA as the crowd in the main room clogged the dancefloor entrance. As clients sipped sweet freeness our Blazin Star run street team rolled through (sporting brand new logo-clad t’s) just in time to deliver the asking public the new ‘F**k Valentines’ issue.

Paperchase Recordings’ DaVinChe and Katie Pearl were up next and despite being half dressed (rocking jumper pon-shoulder) DaVinChe showed Cargo exactly how to play the piano with style. Katie told girls exactly how to handle troublesome guys telling song based stories which involved her letting-off some favourites which included the crowd mover Leave Me Alone. DaVinChe walked the keys and Katie walked the melody, long enough for us to get some snaps (pictured) and leave us with a warm ‘wow, the UK has pure talent’ feeling. As MTV filmed the night everyone was in a relaxed mood and waited to see who’ll grace the stage next.

Scratchy made his was to the stage after a micro R&B interlude and the Yetnal From Bethnal reeled off bars thanks to DJ Maximum’s big selections. Meanwhile in the lesser packed middle room underground magician (in every sense of the word) Dynamo was being filmed for Channel 4. Wowing onlookers with crazy-arse in your face tricks. He showed his growing fan base a live version of his self-titled Dynamo DVD (which incidentally is available to buy now). Ruff Sqwad’s Fuda Guy joined Scratchos and one ‘You Know Me Man’ sent frontliners wild in a ‘zoop zoop’ frenzy. A somewhat unbooked shower ten minutes then followed as SLK’s Flirta D grimed out the stage followed by Ghetto, Skepta, Jammer and the rest. Despite being unauthorised Flirta was on the mic talking all kinds of lyrical madness and the crowd lapped it up.

Manchester’s JSD, Goldfinger, and Nika D of Virus Syndicate finished off the night as Mark One supplied some slick beats. Tune into the next RWD Magazine to see/ read the full rundown.
