Shake-A-Leg @ Vice Magazine's Third Birthday

Outside was truly a rammed affair as the RWD team brushed passed what can only be described as a ‘mix of people’ at Elysium’s person-packed perimeter. After slight hassle at the door we were ushered in and soon mingled with the core… which were undiluted fans of rock. Three years of Vice Magazine were celebrated with acts from across the board. Not only were Kano, Bizzle and Roll Deep on the same bill but so were the likes of The Cribs, Battle, Vincent Vincent & The Villains, The Ivories, Towers of London (who did one decent track before being slewed and having to leave the stage), Hot Chip, TV On The Radio, Whitney, Simian Mobile Disco, Teens Of Thailand and Spykid & Nathan Bennett. Rock/Indie led the nights’ entertainment until a certain Bow based crew made their way to the smaller ‘stage’ at the back of the venue.
With Roll Deep’s Karnage on the decks (Target and Danny Weed were lurking by the bar, something to do with the free drinks we thinks), Scratchy, Flow Dan, Breeze and Trim ripped through bars like a plump kid in a chocolate factory. It really got going when the crowd swayed from left to right as Shake A Leg resonated and we actually saw folks trying to move along to that catchy salsa-like beat. But the highlight for the RWD team had to be when Trim and Scratch linked up for the self-titled Scratchy-produced underground thumper Trim and Scratch - which nearly broke the needle on the Brappleometer. Despite lack of room, for both the artists and the horde of avid listeners, Roll Deep once again impressed.
Then back to the main room and beloved grime/garage was being intertwined with rock/indie music like we were at some kind of Glastonwinder, but that only lasted a while as Kano made his way to the somewhat larger stage.
The guy who’s not afraid to say it’s all about Home Sweet Home went straight into hits off the album. The crowd were absolutely eating everything K.A. fed them and big reactions came from P’s and Q’s and Remember Me. Alongside Kano’s energetic performance MC/artist Dangermouse was in the hiz-ouse and more than held his own, rapidly unloading lyrics as if Baron Greenback was in the room. The captivated audience was one big mosh-like pit as the two went back to back and Kano even had time to kill it with a (RWD ordered) acapella of I’m Back from his (shhhhh don’t talk about it) Beats and Bars mixtape. Big!!! Look out for cameraphone footage to be Bluetoothed any second now as there were about 2 million silver bricks pointing towards the duo.
After Jammer’s impromptu yet massive Murkle Man outburst Lethal and the rest of the Fire Camp soldiers took to the stage. Starting with No, the crew let off a few tracks that had the grime/rock/indie heads literally going nuts. Speaking of that, some of the ladies at the front were trying to shake Lethal’s ‘hand’ and he had to lyrically beat them away with a stick. Lethal took to the speakers and started climbing whilst he and Ozzie B hammered the vocals. 2 ‘You Don’t Wanna War-oooor’ Face ripped it and put the grimed-out cherry on Vice Magazine’s 3rd birthday cake.
A big night! Those who attended… you know. Those who were outside… now you know.
