Online Review: Jammer, Scratchy, Skepta and Co: Straight Outta Bethnal @ 333

Oh my diddy! The first in this exciting series of monthly nights kicked off with a (hmmm what’s louder than a bang) at its Shoreditch based home Friday November 18th. Not ones to shy away from such a splendid line-up of promised proceedings the RWD team made their way down a chilly Old Street and stopped at number 333. After the pleasant door staff checked our guest list credentials we gained access to the dance. Without a single moment spent resting on our lorals, we swiftly moved to the Run the Road Basement only to be greeted by none other than Hattie Collins (RWD Editor) and Chantelle Fiddy (679 A&R, Freelance Journalist) pon-ze-decks. Both with DIY ‘We Don’t Mix’ slogans Puff Painted to their t-shirts we knew we’d be in for an interesting start to the evening. Fiddy seemed content on stirring up crowd hype for her partner in crime who was in fine form and excelled with her timeless selection, choosing an eclectic array of riddims ranging from the grimiest of Lady Sovereign remixes to R&B classics like Foxy Brown and Blackstreet’s Get Me Home. Her epic set was only let down by slight crowd-seething technical hitches [which were not her fault but the person who bought connecting wires from Netto] and her inability to mix, but all-in-all jolly good show girls.
Def Jam UK’s DJ Samurai (who’s more street than the A-Z) and Luckie from Advance replaced the two budding Disc Jockey’s and the night upped its speed. Samurai drew his sword and unleashed just about every big track under the sun and audiographically showed exactly what he’s made of. Ms Collins who so far held the prestigious title of Track of the Night was soon surpassed when we heard Forward 2 (which we like to call Forward 1.91567) - you know the one that was leaked with Flirta D having an asthma attack about half way through. After the various reloads of F1.91567 and many trying to get their breath back from limited Flirta imitations, Ears made his way to the stage.
The Pronoun Boy and his entourage of hungry MCs including the lyrically vast Stamina Boy, the video camera wielding All in One and up-and-coming Hoodlum were waiting for instrumentals and the DJ duly obliged. Right now MC Ears has grown out of Jammer’s shadow and is arguably the hottest thing on road (GO GET HIS MIXTAPE!). Ears with his unique dance style got the crowd to pre-boiling point and his ‘Ear ‘em scare ‘em, wear ‘em tear ‘em’ bars got a massive hijack. Going through each lyric with more vigour than a freshly charged Energiser Bunny, he excelled and proved why he’s one to watch for 2006.
Just when we thought that was it for the night and contemplated a pipe and slipper, Ovaltine influenced early night, it soon took a turn for the better. From nowhere No Lay emerged on the mic and breathed lyrical fire to the avid and growing crowd. The well-known flows which earned her a much deserved reload were a grimed-out audience pleasing treat and she murked the beat until the mic was eventually passed to Roll Deep’s Scratchy.
Mr B.U.N. then proceeded to go back to back with his less talented partner in crime JD but best moments definitely came from Scratch as he let loose with infamous lines like, ‘Stab you in the back, but I’m not a back stabber’ and equally reload-worthy vocal content… Big!!!
With no sign of Bruza or Ace and Invisible (apparently across the other side of town) it was down to Logan ‘more dubs than a mastering suite’ Sama, Skepta, Jammer and co to represent. Skepta (who was once again rocking insane comrade styled From Russia With Love headwear) wasn’t waiting around and soon let off kingsized bars sending for many a crew. Multiple much deserved rewinds followed and then the Murkle Man donned the microphone. Being too far away from on-point selecta Sama to initiate a self-reload he earned one through his own verbal efforts, leaving those inside 333 watching in anticipation. That eagerness was soothed as Skepta unleashed another big bar aimed towards a certain artist from North West London and at that point Jammer went head first into the crowd, performing a Superman Dread stage dive into the unsuspecting individuals at the front. Dressed from head-to-toe in white adidas, Jammer was a blanc blur and somehow at that very moment intensified the jubilation of all those lucky enough to be inside… Once again big big big!!!
Big bad Rossi B did a massive jungle set upstairs and the night in the basement finished with Logan dropping brand new Wiley joints, Slew Dem’s ‘Blaze more than you’ soldier Chronik getting a few big reactions and Fuda from Ruff Sqwad wiping the floor with life-size bars. Another massive night for the RWD team and massive props to the organisers.

Pictures/Review of Vice Magazine's Third Birthday

Shake-A-Leg @ Vice Magazine's Third Birthday

Outside was truly a rammed affair as the RWD team brushed passed what can only be described as a ‘mix of people’ at Elysium’s person-packed perimeter. After slight hassle at the door we were ushered in and soon mingled with the core… which were undiluted fans of rock. Three years of Vice Magazine were celebrated with acts from across the board. Not only were Kano, Bizzle and Roll Deep on the same bill but so were the likes of The Cribs, Battle, Vincent Vincent & The Villains, The Ivories, Towers of London (who did one decent track before being slewed and having to leave the stage), Hot Chip, TV On The Radio, Whitney, Simian Mobile Disco, Teens Of Thailand and Spykid & Nathan Bennett. Rock/Indie led the nights’ entertainment until a certain Bow based crew made their way to the smaller ‘stage’ at the back of the venue.
With Roll Deep’s Karnage on the decks (Target and Danny Weed were lurking by the bar, something to do with the free drinks we thinks), Scratchy, Flow Dan, Breeze and Trim ripped through bars like a plump kid in a chocolate factory. It really got going when the crowd swayed from left to right as Shake A Leg resonated and we actually saw folks trying to move along to that catchy salsa-like beat. But the highlight for the RWD team had to be when Trim and Scratch linked up for the self-titled Scratchy-produced underground thumper Trim and Scratch - which nearly broke the needle on the Brappleometer. Despite lack of room, for both the artists and the horde of avid listeners, Roll Deep once again impressed.
Then back to the main room and beloved grime/garage was being intertwined with rock/indie music like we were at some kind of Glastonwinder, but that only lasted a while as Kano made his way to the somewhat larger stage.
The guy who’s not afraid to say it’s all about Home Sweet Home went straight into hits off the album. The crowd were absolutely eating everything K.A. fed them and big reactions came from P’s and Q’s and Remember Me. Alongside Kano’s energetic performance MC/artist Dangermouse was in the hiz-ouse and more than held his own, rapidly unloading lyrics as if Baron Greenback was in the room. The captivated audience was one big mosh-like pit as the two went back to back and Kano even had time to kill it with a (RWD ordered) acapella of I’m Back from his (shhhhh don’t talk about it) Beats and Bars mixtape. Big!!! Look out for cameraphone footage to be Bluetoothed any second now as there were about 2 million silver bricks pointing towards the duo.
After Jammer’s impromptu yet massive Murkle Man outburst Lethal and the rest of the Fire Camp soldiers took to the stage. Starting with No, the crew let off a few tracks that had the grime/rock/indie heads literally going nuts. Speaking of that, some of the ladies at the front were trying to shake Lethal’s ‘hand’ and he had to lyrically beat them away with a stick. Lethal took to the speakers and started climbing whilst he and Ozzie B hammered the vocals. 2 ‘You Don’t Wanna War-oooor’ Face ripped it and put the grimed-out cherry on Vice Magazine’s 3rd birthday cake.
A big night! Those who attended… you know. Those who were outside… now you know.

Online Review: Semtex Presents The Greatest Show

Billed as ‘The Greatest Show’, the DJ, Def Jam A&R, RWD Columnist and all-round man in the know had a lot to live up to in just two hours on Friday November 11th. With the BBC’s 4th Annual Homegrown Weekend kicking off just an hour before at 7pm – opening with Ras Kwame – the Weekend began with a bang. And when 8pm hit Sem dropped the intro and it was on! Fortunate enough to be inside the 1Xtra studio the RWD team sat back and awaited ‘Greatness’. He soon took charge, and the second in the 50 hour plus marathon-like bonanza continued as the first; showcasing and embracing the obvious talent the UK posses.
Kicking off with Durrty Goodz’s behemoth What’s Happenin’ Remix, Rukus’ (Baby J produced) street crusher Let it Go Remix feat. Yogi, Ty & Klashnekoff soon resounded. Just before the first guest blessed the mic, listeners and the lucky few studio-side were treated to Sway’s No Doe No Show and Klashnekoff’s Can’t You See from Run the Road Volume 2.
With that smooth intro it was time for the first visitor. Fans of the underground, pirate radio or the UK’s biggest Urban Music and Lifestyle magazine are well aware of L. Man as he recently graced October’s coveted About to Blow pages. After the host and the South London born MC looked over L’s upbringing he dropped some chunky bars over some bite sized beats that were easily ingested – inducing smiles, claps and braps [listen out for the RWD team on the http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra playback, making a whole heap of frown provoking noise]. Before L’s time was up he played what we’re sure is gonna be a future hit, Big Love feat. L.Man, Narstie & Bashy and was thoroughly/rightfully mocked over his choice of foot attire… SLIPPERS!!! It was 8ish and man had Granddad creps on! Don’t get it twisted though readers L Dot Man is still hood and dropped some more sickle bars leaving us wanting. Luckily Semtex’s show had more in store.
It was time to revert to Plan B (click_here to see his big new video), and whilst the selecta dropped more Baby J niceness in None of Dem feat. Skinnyman & Lauriss, Plan did his sound check. Once accomplished, the guitar, microphone and acoustic levels were ready, but was Sem? The 679 signing explained his early career, “Basically, I used to throw up before I performed” and continued with, “the more gigs I did the less I threw up. I used to get really nervous before gigs.” Nice, he clarified his controversial lyrical content and then dropped Sick to Def… LIVE! The tale-telling self-taught musician managed to shock Semtex (leaving him lost for words) with his must hear narrative of an inner-city guy who becomes the victim of an ‘incident’. The host went on to inform Plan he’s a talented hot commodity, “You’re like a wet dream for an A&R, you’ve got it all.”
After more tracks from the UK’s finest it was Professor Green’s turn to tear up the mic. The freestyling battle king soon did; after talk on his teeth, Rhymefest, what went down at the Hip Hop Power Summit in the Bahamas and Sem probing in regards to him possibly signing to Mike Skinner’s label The Beats. Semtex threw him a SICK beat (Gorillaz – Dirty Harry) and it was up to the self-confessed marga (skinny) guy to impress. He absolutely killed it with freestyled lyrics involving Kate Moss and glass tables, smoking substances and much more. The host hurled him subjects to rhyme about, like Rhymefest and Mike Skinner; Pro was undeterred and lyrically dotted his I’s and crossed his T’s with every topic thrown. He left leaving Sem with a hefty exclusive special of the potentially massive rapper spitting over Pharrell’s Can I Have It Like That.
With just over half an hour left of what was easily turning into a great show Sem summoned artists left, right and centre. Terra Firma’s Kyza was next to pass, holding about 30 scrunched up A4 sheets of fresh lyrics. Not wanting to freestyle he managed to squeeze out some half decent unplanned lyrics before laying into weighty predetermined bars. He then passed the mic to Cardiff’s Channel U fave Humurak D Gritty who kept us up-to-date his forthcoming mix CD before sprinkling bars from his Rags to Rags EP.
Then the microphone was handed to Cristal City’s K*Ners. The rapper from Bristol who’s never seen without a t-shirt sporting his name, was wearing… yes… a t-shirt sporting his name and soon got stuck into his few minutes of airtime. An eager studio audience watched as the camera man zoomed in on the rapid flow. With K*Ners entrancing listeners it was time for Sem to introduce the last artists of the show… Sway and Bigz!
The pair were slightly late (due to a run in with the law - being stopped, whilst en route), but were soon immovable. Sway educated listeners on when his long awaited debut album This Is My Demo will hit shelves, “It will be out January 31st.” and then went into freestyle mode. Mr Desafo let off various lines like… “I’m like a well known Eastender.” And too went on to settle a certain Rhymefest situation. “He wrote Jesus Walks! And said he won a Grammy… But whose house is the Grammy in?” Then Bigz aka Turkish finished off with bars-o-plenty.
Hats off to Semtex as The Greatest Show was our highlight of an impressive Homegrown Weekend. Which can all be heard on the Homegrown Weekend minisite. So get on over to http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra
